CHAPTER 14
By Friday morning, even more of the snow had melted. The roads were bare, but the yards on Starboard Lane remained covered with a few inches of snow.
Heather once again helped Leslie to open the gift shop. Shortly after, Heather was surprised to see Fiona dragging herself into the shop. The circles beneath her eyes were even darker than yesterday.
âHi, Heather. I was hoping Iâd find you here. Could we talk for a few minutes?â
Heather led her into the library where they could speak privately, while Artie trotted behind them. Fiona looked as if she might break down at any moment. They sat on the brown leather couches by the fireplace, and Artie hopped onto Fionaâs lap. She scratched his head, and he managed to draw a half-smile from his weary new friend. Apparently, Artie felt his work was done, because he jumped off the couch.
âHow was the memorial service last night?â Heather asked as Artie settled at her feet.
âIt was a beautiful tribute to my sister,â Fiona said. âI think itâs just starting to hit me that sheâs really gone.â
âMarjorieâs death was so quick and unexpected. Itâs understandable that youâd feel that way.â
âPerhaps. But I wanted to tell you in person that I donât think Iâm up for investigating anymore. Iâm too tired and Iâd like to focus on grieving my sisterâs loss. I think we should leave the investigation in the hands of the police. Iâd like to thank you for everything youâve done, and please pass my gratitude on to Sydney, as well.â
Heather studied Fiona, who was looking past Heather when she spoke.
âOf course. You need to do what you feel is best. But Iâm a little confused because yesterday, you said that trying to bring your sisterâs killer to justice was therapeutic.â
She shifted her gaze from the wall behind Heather to the empty fireplace. âIt was. I guess it all became too much.â
Heather considered telling Fiona what they had learned about Marjorieâs and Bonnieâs encounter at the diner, but she had promised Joanne she wouldnât reveal her source. Besides, it seemed like it would only bring her more pain, and there was still a chance that Bonnie was innocent.
âIf thatâs how you feel, then of course we understand. If you change your mind, let us know.â
âI donât think I will, but thank you.â
Fiona stood to leave. Heatherâs heart broke for the tormented woman. There was something Fiona wasnât telling her. Had she learned something to implicate Bonnie? Was that why she didnât want any part of bringing Marjorieâs killer to justice? Heather couldnât think of anything else to say, so she walked Fiona to the door.
Before she rejoined Leslie in the gift shop, she pulled her phone from the pocket of her jeans and shot Sydney a quick text. Are you free to talk today?
Before she got to the counter, she received a reply. Can you come over for lunch?
Heather smiled. Howâs 1:00?
Perfect.
Leslie went to get lunch at the Tavern an hour later, then Heather took Artie to Sydneyâs.
